TORONTO, Ontario, January 4th, 2021

AECO Innovation Lab is very pleased to welcome the City of Toronto to the One Ontario coalition as an official supporter of this important initiative to streamline the development application approval process.

One Ontario and its goal of streamlining and improving communication with provincial bodies aligns well with the goals of Toronto's Concept 2 Keys (C2K) program.

Toronto is Canada's largest city and home to more than 2.9 million people. One Ontario and its goal of streamlining and improving communication with provincial bodies aligns well with the goals of Toronto's Concept 2 Keys (C2K) program, which aims to deliver a culture of collaboration, consistency, transparency and accountability between all stakeholders involved in the application and development review process.

Despite the progress that the City of Toronto will make with the C2K program, they also acknowledge that addressing permitting challenges requires close co-operation and management with other stakeholders including developers, builders, planners, design professionals, and other applicable law organizations. Without improving inter-dependencies between all stakeholders, the Development Application Approval Process (DAAP) will continue to be a growing challenge. One Ontario will amplify the value of the City’s existing investments in digitization and e-permitting systems.

The City of Toronto strongly supports the One Ontario initiative, and agrees that a unified data exchange framework would harmonize and streamline the entire development approval processes. Streamlining DAAP would significantly reduce costs by eliminating overlap, duplication, redundant customizations, and help the City realize much needed municipal revenues (taxes, levies, etc.) as projects move more quickly from conceptual planning and design to construction and occupancy. This will also help improve affordability of the end product for the citizens of Toronto.
