TORONTO, Ontario, January 6th, 2021

AECO Innovation Lab welcomes the City of Windsor as a supporter of the One Ontario initiative.

The City of Windsor believes that a harmonized data standard is a key step to achieving a fully automated process.

In 2018, Windsor was the first city in Canada to go fully digital with an e-permitting system in an effort to make the building permit process easier, quicker and more transparent. This effort has provided many lessons learned, including the need for a more streamlined method to communicate with provincial partners outside of the city.

The Corporation of the City of Windsor has taken significant steps to streamline their internal processes, but also acknowledge that addressing permitting challenges requires remarkably close co-operation and management with other stakeholders including developers and applicable law organizations. Without improving interoperability between all stakeholders, the development approval process will continue to be a challenge.

The City of Windsor strongly supports the One Ontario initiative and agrees that a unified data exchange framework would harmonize and streamline the entire development approval process. It would significantly reduce costs by eliminating redundant customization in every municipality, and help them realize much-needed tax revenues as projects move more quickly from design to construction.
