THE PROBLEM
In the first half of 2024, Ontario’s population grew by
but only built 37,245 new homes
And this is down by 6,000 from the first six months of 2023. The impact of population growth is immense. In the last three years, the province experienced a decade’s worth of population growth — 1.2 million people. Ontario's population is growing faster than housing stock.
The Ontario government has committed to building
new homes by 2031
But construction rates are falling significantly short. In 2024, housing starts were projected at 81,000—well below the annual target of 150,000, and a 17% decrease compared to 2023. This represents the lowest annual construction of single-family homes since 1955.
To hit it’s goal, the province needs nearly
new units per quarter
Yet only about 20,600 units were started between April and September 2024. This is below the four-year average of 22,900 for this same quarter. Industry projections suggest the government will fail to hit its housing targets every year until 2027.
